How I Do South by Southwest (SXSW) for Free Every Year

Every March, Austin transforms into the world's biggest convergence of music, tech, film, and food. And every March, I show up — without spending a single dollar on a badge. Here's exactly how I do it.
Why SXSW Without a Badge Is Actually Better
The official SXSW badge can cost anywhere from $500 to $1,500+. But here's what most people don't know: the best conversations, the most authentic networking, and the most memorable experiences at SXSW happen outside the official venues. The free events, the unofficial showcases, the brand activations — that's where the real magic is.
Step 1: Register for a Free SXSW Account
Go to sxsw.com and create a free account. This gets you access to the SXSW Go app, the full schedule, and — crucially — the ability to RSVP to free events. Many brands, startups, and organizations host free events during SXSW week that are open to anyone with a free account. You don't need a badge.
Step 2: Follow the SXSW Free Events Accounts
There are entire Instagram accounts, Facebook groups, and newsletters dedicated to tracking free SXSW events. Search 'SXSW free events 2026' starting in January and you'll find curated lists. Some of my favorites include brand activations by major companies (free food, free drinks, incredible speakers) and unofficial showcases that rival the official ones.
Step 3: Book Your Stay Early (and Smart)
Austin hotels during SXSW are expensive — but Airbnbs and short-term rentals in surrounding areas like New Braunfels (where I live!) are often a fraction of the cost. I've hosted SXSW attendees at my properties for years. Book early, stay outside the city, and drive in or use rideshare.
Step 4: The Food Strategy
As a restaurateur and food person, this is my favorite part. Many restaurants do special SXSW menus and events. Food brands run pop-ups. If you're strategic about it, you can eat incredibly well for free or very cheap all week. Follow local Austin food accounts starting in February — they'll announce everything.
Step 5: Network Like You Own the Place
The best networking at SXSW happens in line for coffee, at the free brand activations, and at the unofficial parties. Bring business cards (yes, still). Be genuinely curious about people. Ask what they're working on. The connections I've made at SXSW have led to real business opportunities, podcast appearances, and friendships that have lasted years.
My Annual SXSW Ritual
Every year I drive up from New Braunfels, hit my favorite free events, eat my way through Austin, and come home with a notebook full of ideas and a phone full of new contacts. It costs me gas money and maybe a few meals. That's it. SXSW is what you make of it — and you don't need a badge to make it incredible.
